Cats Claw Acacia
Acacia greggii, or Cat claw Acacia, is a deciduous
shrub or small tree native from Texas to Arizona and northern Mexico. In nature,
the plant will reach up to 20 feet in height with a 15 foot spread. The
2-pinnate leaves are grey-green. At the leaf axis, there are very sharp spines
shaped much like a cat’s claw. They are very easy to grow in containers and make
interesting bonsai subjects. The shrubs are hardy in the landscape in USDA zone
8-10.
Blooming: Plants bloom in mid summer. The cream colored,
drooping flowers will reach up to 2.25 inches (5.8 cm) long. They are mildly
fragrant.
Culture: Acacia greggii need full sun with a
well-drained soil mix, a soil mix consisting of equal parts of loam and sand
mixed with small gravel to ensure good drainage. The plants are well watered and
allowed to dry before watering again. The plants are very slow growers to start.
Very little trimming and pruning for shape and size is needed.
Propagation: Acacia are
best propagated from seed.

The Acacia or Locust is a rare spiny shrub or small tree that can grow to
heights of 20 ft or more especially if trained/shaped to a single trunk. A
member of the Pea Family and native to the southwestern and southeastern area of
the United States, the New Mexican Locust produces fragrant, exceptionally
pretty pink clustered flowers in the form of showy hanging racemes up to 7
inches long. The flower color can range from white, pale pink, rose, pale rose,
purplish pink to deep red. Branches have spines and leaves are grayish in color.
The flowers open from May to June. An exceptional little flowering specimen,
especially if pinched/trained to a single trunk, suitable for untended tough
southwestern conditions. It will form large thorny flowering thickets/barriers
if left to naturalize.

How To Start These
Seeds:
Scarification: Soak in hot tap water, let stand in water for 24 hours. If
seeds do not swell, treat with boiling water. Boil water and remove from heat.
Put seeds in water and let set for 24 hours
Stratification: None required
Germination: Sow seed 1/4 inch deep, tamp the soil, keep moist, mulch the
seed bed
Other: If boiling water treatment does not allow seed to imbibe, sulfuric
acid treatment is required, innoculant could be used.

If refrigerated, these seeds can be stored for up to a year before you decide to
use them.
